Cookie and local storage policy

Local storage in your browser
The website stores very little data in your own browser, and only when you choose something: the colour theme in the menu or closing a hint or a banner with its X. Nothing is stored when the website opens. This data is not sent to our server, does not contain your location and is not used for analytics, advertising or tracking you across websites. (On the browser cache, which may keep the map images of the areas viewed, see below.)
| Name or key | Type | Purpose | Duration | First or third party |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| fw:map-hint-dismissed | sessionStorage | Remembers that you closed the “Move the map or search for a place” hint shown on mobile with its X, so it is not shown again. Only stored if you close it. | Until you close the tab (see “How to delete this data”) | First party |
| fw:cheapest-dismissed | sessionStorage | Remembers that you closed the “Cheapest in this area” banner so it is not shown again. Only stored if you close it. | Until you close the tab (see “How to delete this data”) | First party |
| theme | localStorage | Remembers the theme (light, dark or system) you choose in the menu. Only stored if you change it. | Until you delete it in your browser | First party |
The website does not use a service worker or store files in your browser's cache on its own. If your browser still has the service worker from a previous version of the website, it is unregistered when you visit and its cache (whose name starts with “fw-”) is deleted; nothing new is stored.
Our server's responses to station and map searches, which carry the area searched or your rounded location, are sent with an instruction for your browser not to store them in its cache.
The website may also delete old data that previous versions stored in your browser, so that it does not remain there.
Third-party connections (not cookies)
To show the map, your browser connects directly to OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org), without you having to click anything, and downloads the map style, tiles, icons and fonts from there. As with any web request, that service receives your IP address, technical data about your browser and the requested map area. According to OpenFreeMap, the service uses Cloudflare as a content delivery network (CDN), which may also receive that technical data. FuelWorld sets no cookies through it; its handling of that data is governed by its own terms. Its log retention and international transfers are explained in the privacy policy.
As with other web resources, your browser may temporarily store map resources in its cache, such as the tiles for the areas you have viewed, including your area if you use “Near me”, and reuse them on later visits. How long it keeps them depends on the caching instructions that apply to each resource and on your browser. Your browser may therefore keep map resources after your visit, and from them someone with access to your device could roughly infer which areas you have looked at. You can empty that cache from your browser settings.
Google Maps and Apple Maps, by contrast, are not loaded when the website opens: they are external sites that only open if you click “Directions” (Google Maps) or, on iPhone and iPad, “Open in Apple Maps”. The link carries the location of the destination station, not yours. Once they open, the handling of your data is governed by each one's own terms and privacy policy.
The website's typeface is served from our own domain, and the website loads no analytics or advertising scripts. Other external links (for example, to the data sources or the map credits) also only open if you click them.
How to delete this data
sessionStorage data is deleted automatically when you close the tab. If your browser restores a tab (for example, on a mobile phone when you reopen it), it may restore that data too; in that case it lasts until you close the restored tab. It only records that you have closed a hint or a banner. You can delete everything else from your browser settings (clear site data). The website will keep working; it will just forget your preferences.
If you share your device with other people, they could access the information that remains stored in the browser. You can delete the site data from your browser settings.
Changes
If the website ever uses cookies or similar technologies for other purposes (for example, analytics or advertising), this policy will be updated and, where required, your consent will be requested before they are used.
